For Olympic swimmer Felicity Passon, sport is far more than competition. It is a platform for national identity, international recognition, and inspiration for future generations. Speaking about Seychelles’ growing presence on the world stage, she explains how international sport is helping the island nation redefine itself beyond its famous beaches and luxury tourism.
“Sport plays a huge role in augmenting our international image,” she says. “When we stand shoulder to shoulder with these large nations, it’s an opportunity for us to leave our mark.”
Representing a Small Nation with a Big Voice
With a population of just around 100,000 people, Seychelles is one of the world’s smallest countries. Yet Passon believes its size has never limited its ambitions.
“Not a lot of people know where Seychelles is,” she says. “People ask, ‘Are you sure that’s a country?’ But international events are our opportunity to show people what we’re really made of.”
She describes Seychellois people as determined, driven, talented, and remarkably diverse.
“We have so much tenacity,” she says. “Despite being a very small nation and incredibly remote, we have such a loud roar when we have the opportunity to showcase that.”
For her, every international competition becomes an opportunity to redefine how the world sees Seychelles. Not simply as a tropical destination, but as a country capable of competing on the global stage.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond medals and performances, Passon believes representation has a lasting impact on young people at home.
“They need to be able to see this representation outside of Seychelles,” she explains. “They need to know that it’s possible for them to be on that global stage.”
She rejects the idea that athletes from small nations simply receive opportunities through sympathy or circumstance.
“It isn’t something that needs to be earned, it is absolutely deserved.”
Seeing fellow Seychellois compete internationally allows young athletes to dream bigger and believe they belong alongside competitors from much larger countries.
Building Visibility Beyond Tourism
While tourism remains the country’s best-known industry, Passon believes sport allows Seychelles to present a much richer national identity.
“International events are really a time where we gain visibility beyond tourism,” she says.
She points to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup as a defining moment.
“As the smallest nation ever to host such an event, we showed the world that we could do it graciously and beautifully.”
The tournament highlighted Seychelles’ vibrant culture, hospitality, energy, and diversity while demonstrating its capability to organize major international sporting events.
“We brought the ambiance, the joy and the energy needed to host such an event.”
Unlocking the Potential of Sports Tourism
Passon sees enormous opportunity in combining Seychelles’ natural environment with sport and wellness experiences.
“We have world-class natural beauty around us,” she says. “We have this vast ocean, mountains, nature trails and year-round warm weather.”
These natural assets create ideal conditions for outdoor competitions, endurance sports, wellness tourism, and adventure travel.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to capitalize on sports, wellness and tourism together.”
She also notes that despite more limited facilities than larger countries, Seychellois athletes maximize every opportunity available to them.
Making Sport Accessible to Everyone
One of Seychelles’ greatest strengths, according to Passon, is its commitment to accessibility.
“We ensure that in Seychelles, sport is accessible to all.”
Unlike systems that increasingly rely on privatized training pathways, Seychelles continues to emphasize equal opportunity regardless of economic background.
“We really value everybody, despite your economic background, having access to what everybody should have access to.”
This inclusive philosophy extends beyond local communities and benefits international visitors participating in sporting events.

Representing Seychelles at the Olympic Games fulfilled Passon’s childhood dream.
“When I was a kid, the Olympic Games were the ultimate goal.”
What made the achievement even more meaningful was qualifying through the Olympic standard rather than receiving a wildcard place; a distinction that demonstrated Seychelles could compete purely on performance.
“I felt so proud to be Seychellois.”
Serving as one of the country’s flag bearers became one of the proudest moments of her career.
“It confirms our place in the world. We do have a place despite being so small.”
The Strength of Community
Passon credits much of her journey to the extraordinary support she received from her family, coaches, and community.
“We’re such a small community. We all know one another.”
She recalls how her parents sacrificed financial stability to support her swimming career, even moving into relatives’ homes so they could continue funding her development.
“My parents believed in my passion and never questioned my goals.”
She also remembers coach Paul Fast, who drove across the island before dawn every day to collect her for training without compensation simply because he believed in her potential.
“He believed that I would eventually make it one day.”
Support also came from the National Sports Council and countless members of the community who rallied behind her throughout her international career.
“The way we’re able to unite and come together for our own people is something that’s so unique.”
Looking Beyond the Beaches
As Seychelles celebrates 50 years of independence, Passon hopes the world will discover a nation defined not only by its landscapes, but also by its people.
“See us beyond tourism. See us beyond the postcard white beaches.”
She believes Seychelles possesses extraordinary potential despite its size.
“We have so much capacity and so much tenacity as a people.”
Her message to international visitors is simple:
“Despite being a small nation, we have limitless potential. Come and discover it for yourselves.”
A Dream for Future Athletes
Looking ahead, Passon hopes Seychelles continues investing in youth and sport so future generations can achieve even greater success.
“My dream for Seychelles is to nurture our athletes here locally.”
Most importantly, she wants every young Seychellois to believe their ambitions are achievable.
“I want youth to know that their dreams are possible. They’re not beyond them. They’re there for the taking.”
For Passon, the future of Seychelles lies not only in its natural beauty, but in empowering its people to believe that no dream is too big; even for one of the world’s smallest nations.
